“Tom Aspinall presents a very challenging matchup for any fighter,” Cormier stated.
“Yet, among all potential opponents, the Jon Jones fight is undoubtedly the most challenging for Pereira. This choice truly reflects Alex’s character.”
Cormier further elaborated, “Alex deliberately called out the toughest possible fight. This also highlights a current trend in MMA, much like with Conor McGregor, where fighters and fans often prioritize the spectacle of a specific fight over the championship belt itself.”
“At this moment, it would be quite simple for Alex to declare, ‘I want to fight Tom Aspinall.’”

If Pereira`s desired fight against Jones materializes in 2026, he would undoubtedly receive support from one of Brazil`s most prominent fighters. However, this situation presents a more complex loyalty for his countrymen than previous bouts.

“He was present during my first fight, and also when I emerged as a breakthrough fighter. I was ranked number two, and he was number one. My admiration for him is immense. He was even there for my second fight against Michael Chandler.”
He concluded, “Without a doubt, it will be a fight where I will sit and root for Brazil, for ‘Poatan.’ However, I will watch with apprehension because Jones is truly great.”
