A lo largo de su extensa permanencia en la selección nacional italiana, De Gennaro también contribuyó a las victorias en la VNL 2022, la Copa del Mundo FIVB 2011 y el Campeonato Europeo 2021. Representó con orgullo a Italia en cuatro Juegos Olímpicos y cuatro ediciones del Campeonato Mundial.
Ampliamente reconocida como una de las mejores líberos de todos los tiempos, De Gennaro fue seleccionada como la mejor jugadora en su posición en los Juegos de París del año pasado. Just over a month after Italy`s triumphant victory at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women`s World Championship, legendary libero Monica De Gennaro declared that the thrilling five-set final against Türkiye, which secured her country`s second world title, marked her final international match.
The 38-year-old confirmed her departure from the Italian national team on Friday via her Instagram account, an announcement widely anticipated. She indicated that the 2025 season was her last in the revered Italian jersey.
In her heartfelt message on Instagram, De Gennaro reflected on her incredible journey and expressed profound gratitude to her teammates and the sport.
De Gennaro joined the national squad in 2006 and concludes her 20-year international career following two exceptionally successful seasons. During this period, the Italian team ascended to global prominence, securing gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the 2025 World Championship, and two consecutive Volleyball Nations League titles, where she earned the MVP award in 2025.
«The time has come to bid farewell to the blue jersey,» her message stated. «A jersey I loved deeply, respected in every action, and honored with all my heart and soul in every match for nearly 20 years. I knew for a long time this would be my last summer with the national team, but I kept it private because I first wanted to fight for the last trophy missing from this extraordinary group. It`s the right moment to step aside and make way for the new talents who are growing strong and ready.»
Throughout her extensive tenure with the Italian national team, De Gennaro also contributed to victories in the 2022 VNL, the 2011 FIVB World Cup, and the 2021 European Championship. She proudly represented Italy in four Olympic Games and four World Championship tournaments.
Widely regarded as one of volleyball`s greatest liberos, De Gennaro was recognized as the best player in her position at last year’s Paris Games. She has consistently received similar accolades in numerous international and club competitions, including the VNL, the World Championship, the FIVB World Grand Prix, the FIVB Club World Championship, and the CEV Champions League.
«I admit, I`ll miss everything,» her message continued. «I`ll miss the travel, the training, and stepping onto the court to proudly represent Italy. But above all, I`ll miss the emotions. The victories shared with exceptional teammates – extraordinary women and athletes with whom I`ve shared an unforgettable journey. My most sincere thanks go to them. Now, however, that moment has arrived. Goodbye, national team. From today, there will be a new fan in the stands, a new voice in front of the TV. But my heart will always be there, with you.»
De Gennaro plans to continue her club career and has just begun her 13th season with Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano in the Italian League, where she plays under the coaching of her husband, Daniele Santarelli.
