Strong Men’s Line-up at Veracruz Challenge

The Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour makes its third visit to Mexico this year with the Veracruz Challenge, taking place from Wednesday, October 1, to Sunday, October 5. This event, the sixth of seven Challenge tournaments on the 2025 calendar, is set to feature a formidable roster of male athletes, including numerous Olympians and World Championship medalists like Austria`s Alexander Horst and Brazil`s George Wanderley.

Brazilian Olympian George Wanderley, a bronze medalist at the 2022 World Championship in Rome, will team up with Saymon Barbosa. They are set to commence their Veracruz campaign directly from Thursday`s main draw, holding the fourth position in seed points. The duo aims to secure their second Beach Pro Tour podium finish together, following their bronze medal at the Alanya Challenge in June.

Leading the men`s entry list are Austria`s Timo Hammarberg and Tim Berger, currently ranked 17th in the FIVB World Ranking. These talented young athletes, aged 21 and 20 respectively, were U21 World Championship silver medalists two years ago. While they have secured medals at the Futures level of the Beach Pro Tour, they are still seeking their inaugural Challenge-level podium. Notably, they recently advanced through qualifiers to reach the quarterfinals of Elite events in Brazil, including Joao Pessoa.

Completing the top three seeds are American Olympians Miles Evans and Chase Budinger, who are looking to break a medal drought since 2023, and Portugal`s Joao Pedrosa and Hugo Campos, bronze medalists from the previous Challenge event in Mexico in March.

The 24-team main draw features a wealth of Olympic talent. Among them are Chile`s three-time Olympians Marco and Esteban Grimalt, alongside other Olympians competing with their current partners, such as Canada`s Samuel Schachter (with Jonathan Pickett), USA`s Chaim Schalk (with James Shaw), Italy`s Alex Ranghieri (with Manuel Alfieri), Switzerland`s Adrian Heidrich (with Jonathan Jordan), Italy`s Enrico Rossi (with Marco Viscovich), Spain`s Adrian Gavira (with Alejandro Huerta), Italy`s Samuele Cottafava (with Gianluca Dal Corso), and the Netherlands` Matthew Immers (with Ruben Penninga).

The qualification rounds will also see notable entries, including the 42-year-old Austrian veteran and four-time Olympian, Alexander Horst. A silver medalist at the 2017 World Championship, Horst will compete with his new teammate Moritz Pristauz, making their second Beach Pro Tour appearance together since the Hamburg Elite in August.

Australian Olympian Thomas Hodges, paired with Paul Burnett, will also participate in the Veracruz qualifiers. The roster of promising talent in the qualification stage also includes Belgium`s Kyan Vercauteren and Joppe Van Langendonck, the 2023 U21 world champions; Poland`s Szymon Pietraszek and Jakub Krzeminski, the 2024 U19 world champions; and Switzerland`s Florian Breer, the 2014 U17 world champion, playing with Luc Fluckiger.

The Veracruz Challenge will feature a 32-team main draw for each gender. The competition commences with a qualification round, where eight teams will earn their spot to join 24 directly seeded teams in the main draw. The main draw begins with a modified pool play format, comprising eight pools of four teams each. This stage includes two pool semifinals, a losers’ match, and a winners’ match to determine pool standings. Teams finishing third in their pools will face runners-up from other pools in the single-elimination sixteenthfinal round. Winners advance to the eighthfinal, challenging the eight pool winners. The tournament then proceeds with quarterfinals, semifinals, and medal matches to crown the champions.

The men`s qualification matches for the Veracruz Challenge are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, October 1, at 12:00 local time (18:00 UTC).

Un potente cartel masculino en el Desafío de Veracruz

El Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour llega a México por tercera vez este año con el Desafío de Veracruz, que se celebrará del miércoles 1 de octubre al domingo 5 de octubre. Este evento, el sexto de los siete torneos Challenge del calendario de 2025, promete un formidable cartel de atletas masculinos, incluyendo a numerosos olímpicos y medallistas del Campeonato Mundial, como el austriaco Alexander Horst y el brasileño George Wanderley.
